Dystonia

Dystonia is a movement disorder that causes involuntary contractions and spasms of the muscles. These muscle contractions force one or more parts of the body into repetitive, twisting movements and abnormal postures. It can involve one muscle or many muscles throughout the body. Symptoms can be mild to severe and the cause is unknown. Treatment options include mainly medication and deep brain stimulation.

Dystonia can be classified into four different groups:

  1. Writer’s clamp
  2. Torticollis ( cervical dystonia)
  3. Blepharospasm
  4. Huntingon’s disease

It is estimated there are approximately 250,000 cases in the US, that is 1 in 3,000 people that have this disorder. Cervical dystonia is the most common type.

After years of study and research, it has been found that dystonia is related to the cervical spine, the jaw joints, and the skull.  At our office, we believe that an oral appliance can possibly reduce movement disorders by 80% to 90% within days of wearing the appliance. Again, this is without any injection or medication.

With our treatment, we are able to give our patients significant relief and control in their daily lives. Although it is not a cure, we have seen a significant increase in our patient’s quality of life.

Therefore, if you are suffering from a movement disorder such as dystonia or know that we are here to help. Please give us a call at (714) 893-8517 for a consultation.
